looking for creativity & inspiration in human body with Honor
Mind My Story conversation with Artist Honor Rendall
Honor Rendall is an Artist specialising in Abstraction and Portraiture. If you have no idea how the two can work together ( I kinda struggled picturing that too at first), you must find out more about Honor and her work. It’s stunning. It's beautiful. It's celebrating human body for what it is.
I can't even remember how I got to know Honor. It was one of those random Instagram connections where we started talking about art and what not. A few weeks later, I saw Honor was looking for portrait photos of people she could paint. So I literally Instagram DM'ed her a photo of my eyes. My boyfriend thought it was the weirdest thing I’ve done. He might have been right, but it also meant that now I have a stunning little mini piece with half of my face on it and I love it. So no regrets for being weird! Later that motnh I was running a giveaway to mark Mental Health Awareness Week on my page and Honor actually got selected as a winner of my 'Botanical Gardens' piece. Since then, we continued staying in touch about all things abstract art and I absolutely love seeing her grow as an artist.
This week, I sat down with Honor to chat a bit about our art and why she does what she does. As an artist to an artist, I also had a chance to get her perspective on my ‘Botanical Gardens’ piece that is hanging up in her bedroom.
LP: Tell me about your art. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
HR: I have always loved abstract artwork, however my background in Human Biology has meant that I have recently become really interested in involving elements of the human body in my work. I use Instagram as a way to get inspired by artists.
LP: What’s your ‘why’? What do you wish to achieve with your art?
HR: I want to show the beauty of all women by involving different facial features in my abstract style
LP: When it comes to creativity inside your studio and outside it... What does being creative mean to you?
HR: Creativity to me is a way to show your personality. Everyone’s artwork shows a little bit of their personality by their use of colour or how they apply their marks. Creativity to me is such a huge part of who I am.
LP: So if you have a so called ‘creative block’ – what do you do to get over it?
HR: I have a day off and do something different like exercise. For me I paint when I am inspired, the artwork is so much richer and personal when I wait to be inspired and feel positive.
LP: Can you share a little bit about your wellbeing, why does it matter to you, and what is your most important wellbeing ritual you have?
HR: Wellbeing is so important to me. A way in which I maintain a positive wellbeing is through painting, as it is such a relaxing and personal experience. The “Botanical Gardens” painting in my bedroom is so peaceful and calming, it really creates an atmosphere perfect to maintain a good wellbeing.
LP: I’m humbled to hear that. Could you tell me a little bit more about what you see in the ‘Botanical Gardens’ painting and why you like it?
HR: As soon as I saw how gorgeous botanical gardens was, I wanted it. The painting was different to others I have seen in a similar style due to the gold reflects which looks so beautiful with the greens. It is amazing that even though it is an abstract piece, you can obviously see where the name ‘Botanical Gardens’ came from. The richness of the greens and blues seems as if it came straight from a garden full of beautiful plants.
LP: What emotions does it elicit?
HR: Due to the vibrant colours the painting projects joy. However alongside this, I find the blues really calming. This is why I thought it was a perfect painting for my bedroom.
That's it for now - I promised you all these will be short and sweet! Thanks Honor - it's been such pleasure chatting to you!
